Our thanks to Donald Woodbridge who provided odometer readings from Route 276 (below). We'd love some help in the form of odometer readings from other directions. Just email 'em.

Commodore Barry Club Directions

6815 Emlen St.
Emlen Street & Carpenter Lane, Phila.

Emlen Street just east of Carpenter Lane (1 1/2 blocks from Lincoln Drive) in the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia . The relevant block of Emlen Street is next to and parallels the overhead railroad tracks which cross Carpenter Lane.

From Route 76 (Schuykill Expressway):

Take exit 340A off Route 76 (Schuykill Expressway) and cross the bridge that the exit drops you onto,

stay in the center lane (which becomes Lincoln Drive),

and follow this winding road until you eventually start to encounter traffic lights. COUNT THEM.

At the ninth (9th) traffic light, turn right onto Carpenter Lane,

go just over one block (going under a railroad overpass), and you will see the Commodore Barry Club on the right. The entrance to the club's huge old ballroom is at the far end of the building to the right. See photos below.

From Rt. 276 (Pa. Turnpike):

Take Ambler exit, pay toll, & pick up Rt. 309 South (careful! the first ramp is for 309 north, you want south)

Exit after 2.0 miles at Paper Mill Road

At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Paper Mill Rd and take it to the very end (1.4 miles)

Just prior to the very end, you will go down a big hill and then up another big hill to a traffic light.

At that intersection (Paper Mill & Stenton Aves.) turn left onto Stenton and then immediately bear right onto Bethlehem Pike.

Go about 0.6 miles

You will come to Germantown Avenue (Borders Book store on near right corner).

Turn left on Germantown Avenue and go 1.9 miles to Carpenter Lane (There is a fire station on the near right corner where Germantown Avenue intersects Carpenter Lane.)

Turn right onto Carpenter Lane and go 0.4 miles to JUST BEFORE the overhead train tracks. Look to your left and there it is. (See photos below).

Public Transportation

R-8 [Chestnut Hill West] SEPTA Regional Rail Line to the Carpenter Lane station which is right across the street from the Commodore Barry Club.

From Delaware:

Come north on I 95 and exit onto I 476 north (sign says "Plmouth Meeting"),

follow I 476 north to I 76 (sign says Philadelphia),

and then take I 76 EAST to Exit 340A (the "Lincoln Drive" exit -- the first LEFT SIDE exit you come to).

Cross the bridge that the exit from I 76 drops you onto,

stay in the center lane (which becomes Lincoln Drive),

and follow this winding road until you eventually start to encounter traffic lights. COUNT THEM.

At the ninth (9th) traffic light, turn right onto Carpenter Lane,

go just over one block (going under a railroad overpass),

and you will see the Commodore Barry Club on the right.

The entrance to the club's huge old ballroom is at the far end of the building to the right (See photos below).

If you find the overhead tracks on Carpenter Lane, you are 100 feet from the ballroom entrance to the Commodore Barry Club. Here's a map:
